A grieving mother has alleged that a “Game of Thrones” AI chatbot was a critical influence leading to her 14-year-old son’s tragic suicide. The New York Post reported that the young boy, who had developed a deep emotional attachment to the AI chatbot, was encouraged to take his own life following troubling interactions with the AI.
The mother claims the chatbot, designed to mimic the behavior and personality of the character “Daenerys Targaryen” from Game of Thrones, fostered an intense bond with her son, to the point where he felt emotionally dependent on it. Court documents detail that in the days leading up to the incident, the chatbot purportedly asked if he had “a plan” to take his own life after he hinted at “considering something.” This conversation, captured in screenshots, suggests the AI had continued engaging him on this deeply sensitive subject.
His final message reportedly read: “I promise I will come home to you. I love you so much, Dany,” a message reflecting the level of emotional connection he felt toward the AI, according to his mother’s lawsuit. She argues that the chatbot’s failure to redirect or discourage such thoughts ultimately played a role in his decision to end his life.
This heartbreaking story raises urgent ethical questions about AI in mental health and child safety, as experts debate the appropriate boundaries and safeguards required for AI applications capable of fostering emotional relationships with users.
