Suchir Balaji went public with concerns about the ChatGPT’s alleged copyright violations in October. Officials said he died by suicide.

Suchir Balaji, 26, a former employee of OpenAI, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment, with the official cause of death reported as suicide by the SF Chronicle. Balaji had previously exposed what he claimed were violations of copyright laws by OpenAI’s programs.

He argued that OpenAI’s practices were detrimental to businesses and entrepreneurs, whose data was used to enhance ChatGPT, giving it an unfair advantage over other AI platforms.

In response to the news, an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch, “We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today, and our hearts go out to Suchir’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

OpenAI’s most well-known product, ChatGPT, is a chatbot launched in 2022 that aggregates information from data across the internet. In an interview with the Times in August, Balaji explained his decision to leave the company, cautioning, “This is not a sustainable model for the internet ecosystem as a whole.”
