Kemi Badenoch: As a Yoruba, I Have Nothing in Common with Northern Nigeria

In a recent interview, the leader of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, made pointed remarks about Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, asserting her distinct Yoruba identity and disassociating herself from the northern part of the country. This comes amid ongoing criticisms following her previous statements on immigration and corruption in Nigeria.

Phrank Shaibu, spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, responded to the criticisms of Badenoch, suggesting that her critics engage in self-reflection.

Vice President Shettima had previously criticized Badenoch for her negative comments about Nigeria in British media interviews, particularly regarding immigration and corruption, and suggested she abandon her Nigerian name. In response, Badenoch’s spokesperson defended her stance, and Badenoch further fueled the identity debate in an interview with The Spectator.

In her interview, Badenoch stated, “I find it interesting that everybody defines me as being Nigerian. I identify less with the country than with the specific ethnicity (Yoruba). I have nothing in common with the people from the north of the country, the Boko Haram where Islamism is. Being Yoruba is my true identity, and I refuse to be lumped with northern people of Nigeria, who ‘were our ethnic enemies,’ all in the name of being called a Nigerian.”

Badenoch also emphasized her commitment to the United Kingdom, referencing her surname’s association with warriors and protectors of the crown: “Somebody once told me when I was very young that my surname was a name for people who were warriors. They protected the crown, and that’s what I see myself as doing. I am here to protect, and I will die protecting this country because I know what’s out there.”

Shaibu, in his response, urged Vice President Shettima to focus on more constructive activities rather than criticizing Badenoch. In a post on X, he wrote, “Those criticising @KemiBadenoch should pause for a moment of introspection. The mere fact that her name is Kemi or that she has Yoruba roots does not automatically render her Nigerian. After all, Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus @gabrieljesus9 is not the son of God. @officialSKSM should find something useful to do with his time.
